Vintage Typography

When I went to the National Railway Museum at York I found a lot of the typography had a great authentic look and would help me with my country cakes brief to make it vintage but also country but looks modern as well. Which is a difficult balance I find.

Having a lion to symbolise British which is common animal to represent England as being strong and full of pride. The typography also has the strenght of being bold and not decorative.

The different size of the typography and the outline with also the bright British red colour makes it look very English.

This style of typography relay relate to my country cakes of being traditional and country feel.

Marks and Spencers
At the Marks and Spencer gallery in the Leeds Uni showed the history of the store and also its changes. This was a perfect look at primary research for looking old design to try and make country cakes have a vintage retro look.

This is the vintage version logo for the Marks and Spencer logo for the exhibition. Seems that having this old fashion style logo all connects to having circles.

This is a booklet shows what they sold and show how out dated they are.
These posters are a great example using a cheap and chearful concept, using limited colours and in very basic design. This is makes it look like a vintage style.

Logo design and applications for a local San Francisco coffee start-up. Elsewhere, you can track the development of their space and identity. Simple and the texture stock gives it more depth but also very modern.

This design made me think that I could country Cakes buisness cards and to exspand the companys name.

From going back to the style of the old fashion look. I have been looking at a designer who is inspired by walking the streets of NYC. s well He has a more handmade forms such as screen-printing, letterpress, illustration and collage.

The texture of the stock gives an older age but I can not do that as country cakes has a cots limit. But I caould use my own version. and expland the idea.

The typography gives a vintage look gives it the depth of design. The style of the way he works as hand render approach also creates this vintage look.

This has that liquid style of juice split and splatted, the use of colours make it look like melted ice cream. It makes look like a massive flavour to it.

This is more controlled as design and like as if it has a shine to it rather than liquid.

The texture paper backgound makes it look a lot older and the image and typography has a stamp quality using at least 4 diffent colours, all bright and fit well incontrasts and the theme but still making it modern and fresh in todays design.

Typographie vintage book
I like the fact it looks very vintage and old but had a clean white background and somethings going with the page rather making it plain and dull. Uses just 2 colours, which is great idea for cheap costs. there is somehting very western in the style and has that hand drawen illustration.

Miss Jessie’s

It works well how the typography is used more than one styles and suits the connect between the typography and the subject of each word.

Primary Research
I have started my primary research looking at packaging of cakes in other supermarkets:

A lot of the Morrison's cake boxes are similar how they produce there packaging for the birthday cakes, Have a very simple bog slandered card box with assert ate over the top. Also they have considered who the target audience they are aiming for, example this is for a young girl round about 2-10 years old. Using bright pink colours and a teddy character. This is also aimed at parents or adults to buy for there naughters. Giving a stereo type of what A girl wants for a birthday cake.

Same again it is quick to decided which cakes are for who by colour and the subject. Prices are around £6-£8. Which is about the same price that country cakes charge.

Pete Yates the owner of Country Cakes LTD mention of having the slices in acetate which is a good idea and might be cheaper but not very recyclable.

Even though this is not for cakes, it's still really helpful to look at because of the the style which is not typically stereotyped for the audience of gender which I am looking for not be just for one particle gender. This packaging has a lot more consideration of good design. Marks and Spencer's have brilliant new designs, particle the marks and Spencer 125 years designs which look amazing and has a purpose showing how far Marks and Spencer's have become and using that to promote it with design.

The first Move
During christmas at Cumbria I work at a supermarket and I notice that I cake company that I love because they taste amazing, but sadly dont sell that well because of the packaging doesn't protect the cakes and gets crushed. so I am country cakes ltd to offer to design some packaging for free and sent a few logo designs to show ideas. this was the email i sent him and the logo designs, you can also see these deign on my PPD blog.
Dear Peter Yates,
Firstly Happy New Year
As an avid Country Cakes consumer and fan (especially the lemon and coconut cake!)
I do hope you don't mind my contact.
My name is Claire Birtwistle and am a Graphic Designer in my final year of my Degree course at Leeds College of Art and Design, my home
being in Cumbria.
I have notice that your packaging for the cakes tends to tear and open somewhat too easily and are unprotected from being damaged. I therefore thought this would be a good opportunity to ask if I could design a packaging solution which may help prevent this happening?
This would be as a non profit input from myself (being a fan) I am more than happy to treat this as a project, and have already created a New Country Cakes logo
design you may wish to take a look at?
If you are interested what I have come up with and would like to take this further. please reply to this e-mail address. again, I do not want to make any profit from this,
I just want to build a good portfolio and get some experience working with other clients.
Thank You
Claire Birtwistle

He replied back:
Hi Claire,
Of course I would love some help, you must be psychic!
You're right, it has become more of an issue as we've grown ( even though we are still a tiny business), particularly with the large cakes, and Asda have approached us with an interest in the cake portions, but want an acetate box?
I hope you're up to eating more cakes than you would normally, I can't expect you to work without being fed!
Let me know how you want it to work.
Regards
Peter

Bringing an old style typography but making a clean modern look. Works well as the style links back to the ice cream. This is a good research for my country Cakes ltd.bring the country style cakes earthly homemade oranigic style which links well of the company being independent and creating nice d=basic cakes.
